 Whether you're hiking in the mountains, commuting in the rain, or simply trying to stay dry, waterproof fabrics are essential.  These specialized materials are designed to repel water, keeping you and your belongings dry and comfortable.  However, not all waterproof fabrics are created equal.  Some are completely impermeable, while others allow moisture vapor to escape and are breathable. Understanding the technology behind waterproof fabrics helps you choose the right gear for your needs.

 1.  What Does Waterproof Actually Mean?

 A fabric is considered waterproof if it can withstand water pressure without allowing water to penetrate.  This is usually measured by a water column rating.  Waterproof fabrics have a rating of at least 1,500 millimeters. True waterproof fabrics are impermeable to water, providing complete protection in wet conditions.

 2.  Gore-Tex: The Gold Standard

 Gore-Tex is a revolutionary waterproof, breathable membrane.  It contains microscopic pores that are too small for water droplets to pass through but large enough for water vapor (sweat) to escape.  This unique technology keeps you dry from both external water and internal perspiration, making it ideal for high-performance outerwear.

 3.  PU (Polyurethane) Coated Fabrics

 Polyurethane coatings are applied to fabrics to make them waterproof.  The coating creates a barrier that prevents water from penetrating the fabric.  PU-coated fabrics are commonly used in raincoats, umbrellas, and backpacks.  They work well and aren't too expensive, but they don't let air flow through, so you might sweat inside the garment. 

4.  Nylon and Polyester: The Waterproof Base

 The most common base fabrics for waterproof gear are polyester and nylon. These synthetics are tough, light, and long-lasting. To create a barrier that is impervious to water, they are frequently coated or laminated with waterproof materials. Additionally, they dry quickly, making them ideal for moist environments. 

5.  PVC and rubber are 100% waterproof. 

Rubber and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) are completely waterproof materials.  These materials are impermeable to both air and water, offering maximum protection in extreme wet conditions.  Rubber is used in rain boots, waders, and heavy-duty raincoats.  However, they are not breathable and can become uncomfortable in warm conditions.

 6.  Waxed Cotton: Traditional Waterproofing

 Waxed cotton is a classic waterproof fabric.  The cotton is impregnated with paraffin wax, creating a water-resistant coating.  Famous jackets like the Barbour and Belstaff are made of waxed cotton. It lasts a long time, allows for some airflow, and ages beautifully. However, in order to keep its waterproof properties, it needs to be rewaxed on a regular basis. 

7.  Finish with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) 

Fabrics are coated with a chemical called DWR to repel water. Unlike waterproof membranes, DWR causes water to bead up and roll off the surface rather than soaking in.  This finish is often used on jackets and outdoor gear.  DWR is not permanent and needs to be reapplied over time as it wears off.

 8.  Waterproof vs.  Water-Resistant

 Waterproof and water-resistant are not the same.  In heavy, prolonged rain, you'll stay dry with waterproof fabrics. Water-resistant fabrics can handle light rain or drizzle but will eventually allow water to penetrate.  Most of the time, water-resistant clothing is less protective, cheaper, and more breathable. 

9.  Seam Sealing: The Weakest Link

 Even the most waterproof fabric will leak if the seams aren't sealed.  Seams are the points where water can enter a garment.  Seam sealing involves applying waterproof tape or glue over the seams to prevent leaks.  Fully taped seams are essential for true waterproof protection.

 A: Yes, but use a gentle detergent and follow the manufacturer's instructions.  Some detergents can damage the waterproof coating.  For Gore-Tex, use a special technical wash.

 Q2: How do I restore the waterproofness of my jacket?

 A: You can restore DWR finishes by using a spray-on or wash-in waterproofing treatment.  For waxed cotton, you need to reapply wax regularly.

 Q3: Is waterproof fabric always better?

 A: Not necessarily.  Waterproof fabrics are less breathable and more expensive.  For light rain or everyday wear, water-resistant may be more comfortable and practical.
